Hagley School of Music is designed for students who are passionate about, capable of, and interested in pursuing amusic career. The course is run by musicians for musicians of the future.
Hagley School of Music will enable you to fully immerse yourself in music while working towards NCEA Level 2 or
3, and will give you the opportunity to plan, create, and implement all aspects of your own gig.

HSM Musician Training
These full-time music courses consist of Music Immersion classes (16 or 12 hours) and 4 hours of Industry Studies
packaged classes. The level 3+ programme also includes an elective Senior College subject to allow completion of
University Entrance.
Course Components for Music Immersion Classes (16 hours)
Music Making: Performance & Creation
• Develop instrumental and vocal skills through performance workshops andperformances
• Develop performance and composition/songwriting skills through music-making
• Develop knowledge of music theory and aural learning skills through music-making
• Develop music analysis skills through the study of musical works
Music Teaching: Pedagogy, Music Theory, and Coaching
• Gain knowledge of teaching and coaching music
• Acquire a history of music and research skills related to the music topic
Music Technology: Live Sounds and Recording
• Develop music technology skills, including recording and software engineering
• Develop skills for studio performance and learn to use recording equipment
• Develop music video planning and production skills
Industry Studies (4 hours)
• Learn about bookkeeping for the music business
• Learn to create and manage a gig
• Learn to create their own promotional kit – including CV writing
• Develop knowledge of screenwriting
Level 2 – Course Components
This full-time music course consists of 16 hours of Music
Immersion classes and 4 hours of Industry Studies packaged classes.

55 credits (includes 6 writing UE Literacy requirements)

21 credits (includes 6 writing and 5 reading for UE
literacy requirements)
Level 3 – Course Components
This full-time music course consists of 12 hours of Music Immersion classes, 4 hours of Industry Studies packaged classes and 4 hours of one further elective UE-approved subject in Senior College.
Music Immersion (12 hours)
72 credits (includes 4 reading/writing & 6 reading towards
UE Literacy requirements)
Music Making: Performance & Creation, Music Technology: Live Sounds & Recording
Music Teaching: Pedagogy, Music Theory, & Coaching
Industry Studies (4 hours)
21 credits Business Studies
