Hagley has an exceptional and very strong music culture. The School of Music is an amazing opportunity for students in Year 12 or 13 to study what they love in a full-time setting, with access to great equipment and tutors with know how.

These courses have been designed for students who have a passion, ability and a strong interest in a career in music. It enables them to fully immerse themselves while working toward a National Certificate in Music and NCEA Levels 2 or 3.

School of Music NCEA Level 2

We offer practical and theoretical study in all aspects of music, as well as literacy and numeracy related to music. Students may be able to take one other subject, depending on their timetable. The course of study is one or two years (see School of Music Level 3) and is designed to lead on to tertiary study at CPIT, MAINZ, Vision College or university. The Level 2 course will offer NCEA Level 2 as well as a National Certificate in Music at Level 2.

Major course components:

  • Understand music in context
  • Research and analyse music in a range of styles and contexts.

Develop practical knowledge:

  • Apply knowledge and analyse music theory through aural, practical and written work.

Develop ideas:

  • Create compositions and reflect on and evaluate the composition process.

Communicate and interpret music:

  • Prepare, present and evaluate performances. Analyse your own and others’ performances.

Entry requirements: Interview and audition. Some music theory knowledge – a test will be given.

School of Music NCEA Level 3

The School of Music Level 3 is an extended music course that runs for 12 hours a week. It is for musically motivated students who wish to major in this subject. We offer practical and theoretical study in all aspects of music as well as regular public performances.

The course of study is designed to lead on to tertiary study at CPIT, MAINZ, Vision College or university. The Level 3 course will offer NCEA Level 3 credits as well as a National Certificate in Music at Level 3. This subject taken in conjunction with two other UE approved subjects will allow you also to gain the Level 3 approved subject requirements for University Entrance.

  • Research, analyse and evaluate music in a range of styles and contexts.

  • Analyse, apply and evaluate music theory through aural, practical and written work.

Develop ideas:

  • Create, refine and represent compositions and reflect on and evaluate the composition process.

  • Prepare, present, refine and evaluate performances.
