HALC Community Courses

HALC runs on-site community courses at Champion street campus.

These include:

Literacy Pathways course. Full-time (20 hours per week). Learners work towards NCEA Level 1 credits, learner driver licence and improving computer skills, while developing literacy and numeracy skills.

(ESOL) English for speakers of other languages classes from beginner to intermediate level. These classes are FREE for New Zealand residents. The focus of the classes is everyday English for living in New Zealand.

First Steps to Literacy and Numeracy course for adults with intellectual impairments. Part-time, up to 12 hours per week.

Adult Community Education courses at the Hagley College Campus including:

  • Refugee women’s cooking
  • Refugee women’s sewing
  • ESOL computing
  • ESOL learner driver licence

HALC offers literacy pathways courses in various Christchurch communities, including:

  • Upper Riccarton
  • Aranui/Linwood
  • Rowley
  • St Albans
  • North City – ESOL
  • Wigram – ESOL

The courses are for approximately 8 hours a week throughout the year (during term time). Our Literacy Pathways course allow learners to learn at their own pace and level, based on individual goals and needs. The classes are small – up to 10 learners per course. The tutors are friendly and supportive and are experienced in developing programmes which recognise individual learning styles.
