HALC Community Courses

HALC runs Literacy and Numeracy courses at locations across Christchurch.

These include:

Literacy Pathways (Youth) course. Full-time (20 hours per week). Learners work towards NCEA Level 1 credits, learner driver licence and improving computer skills, while developing literacy and numeracy skills.

First Steps to Literacy and Numeracy course for adults with intellectual impairments. Part-time, up to 12 hours per week, Mon – Thurs.

Adult Community Education courses at the Hagley Campus, and Edgeware Campus:

  • Women’s cooking
  • Conversation class
  • ESOL computing
  • ESOL learner driver licence

Literacy pathways courses: Part-time, up to 8 hours (two sessions) per week during term time.

  • Upper Riccarton
  • Rowley
  • St Albans

Our Literacy Pathways course allow learners to learn at their own pace and level, based on individual goals and needs. The classes are small – up to 10 learners per course. The tutors are friendly and supportive and are experienced in developing programmes which recognise individual learning styles.
