International Enrolments 26
Te Puna Wai o Waipapa – Hagley College represents education done a bit differently!
We are located in the central city opposite the picturesque Hagley Park. Our school is non uniform wearing and we are all on a first name basis. These seem like small things but actually represent strong relationships, high levels of respect and a focus on student and staff wellbeing. Learning is also very important at Hagley. We have a large variety of subject options such as Outdoor Education, Psychology, Motions Graphics, Sculpture, Hospitality, Fashion, English, Maths, Te Reo Māori, Earth and Space Science. Alongside regular NCEA subjects there are a number of pathway courses that are specific to Music, Pre-Health and Early Childhood for example. Students also have the opportunity to learn foundational English Language across a range of different levels. These classes exist for both international students as well as adolescent and adult migrant and former refugee students that make up our very diverse community.
We encourage students to be involved in extra curricular opportunities which includes sport and our wide range of clubs and activities that run at lunchtimes.
We attract short term International Student stays such as Leonie and Nathan who were part of our school for a Term in 2025 whilst they were travelling with their family from France. Christchurch was one of their stops on their travels and it was great to see them immersed in our school environment and continuing their studies. Here is what they thought:
At Hagley, I felt very much welcome and it was great. I liked the welcome ceremony. In the beginning the teacher shows us all of the buildings so I was never lost. The buildings and the park are great.
The classes are funny and not annoying.
I enjoyed choosing two subjects : robotics and sport.
We can buy some food in the cafe if we forget to take our lunch or just if we want and it is very good.
Nathan Chételat, 9DD, 13 years old
I really liked the fact that we can choose our subjects and head ourselves in our future job direction with the things that we enjoy doing. It’s more motivating to go to school.
I find it nice that students and teachers have an interactive and close relationship.
Hagley is an excellent school.
Thank you for welcoming me to Hagley.
