Certificate in Jazz and Improvisation
13JAZ - NCEA Levels 1-4
A course in jazz and improvisation, with a strong emphasis on
performance skills. The certificate gives enhanced entry to the degree
course at thePolytechnic School of Jazz. There will be public performances during the year. Classes are held late afternoon.
Theory
Swing, bossa nova, blues, jazz chords, scales, keyboard lab. Rhythmic study.
History
Jazz styles in the 20th century from Dixieland and swing to bebop and modern.
Improvisation
Solo and scat in different styles.
Instrumental Skills
Individual tuition provided for all instruments and voice.
Aural Skills
Weekly ear training sessions.
Performance
Weekly ensemble sessions (quintet sextet).
Regular performances.
Credits: 26 Internal. Duration: 8 hours tuition
plus 2 hours of key competency development.
Entry Requirements: Interview and audition.
Students are expected to play an instrument or sing.
